The Arma Christi, the cluster of objects associated with Christ's Passion, was one of the most familiar iconographic devices of European medieval and early modern culture. From the weapons used to torment and sacrifice the body of Christ sprang a reliquary tradition that produced active and contemplative devotional practices, complex literary narratives, intense lyric poems, striking visual images, and innovative architectural ornament. This collection displays the fascinating range of intellectual possibilities generated by representations of these medieval 'objects,' and through the interdisciplinary collaboration of its contributors produces a fresh view of the multiple intersections of the spiritual and the material in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It also includes a new and authoritative critical edition of the Middle English Arma Christi poem known as 'O Vernicle' that takes account of all twenty surviving manuscripts. The book opens with a substantial introduction that surveys previous scholarship and situates the Arma in their historical and aesthetic contexts. Sir John Betjeman remains the most popular English poet of today. He has been termed a 'national teddy bear', and some commentary has addressed his work in rather such terms. However, it is evident that most of his key themes - the spirit of place (or 'place-myth'), mundane lives ('petit recits') or historical continuity (the 'presence of the past') - have specific relevance to postmodern and, especially, environmental concerns. Dennis Brown's book assesses Betjeman's contribution in the light of this, emphasising its ironic self-reflexivity, its rendering of Englishness and a 'soft' masculinity, and its ecumenical Christian tolerance. The popularity of Betjeman's lyrics, and his verse-autobiography Summoned by Bells, is considered as indicative of Britain's post-imperial self-revaluation. It is shown how the poet's technique offers an accessible alternative to more complex neo-modernist poetics. Overall, the book stresses Betjeman's contemporaneity, and his relevance to an era of 'contingency, irony, and solidarity'.

The compilation Fortunes Stabilnes, the English poetry Charles d'Orleans wrote in the course of his twenty-five year captivity in England after Agincourt, requires a larger lens than that of Chaucerianism, through which it has most often been viewed. A fresh view from another perspective, one that attends to form and style, as well as to the poet's French traditions, reveals a more conceptually complex and innovative kind of poetry than we have seen until now. The essays collected here reassess him in the light of recent work in Middle English studies. They detail those qualities that make his text one of the most accomplished and moving of the late Middle Ages: Charles's use of English, his metrical play, his felicity with formes fixes lyrics, his innovative use of the dits structure and lyric sequences, and finally, above all, his ability to write beautiful poetry. From the day I picked up my first two hives, back in 1964, I have been asked questions about honey bees. Some questions were asked by folks who were just curious about bees and other questions were asked by folks who had an interest in getting into beekeeping themselves. Even my scout master couldn't resist asking me questions about beekeeping. When I was taking my beekeeping Merit badge exam, (which unfortunately the Boy Scouts don't offer any longer.) my scout master was so fascinated about all the beekeeping equipment and my presentation that he got into beekeeping himself. There is so much to learn about beekeeping. I could spend another lifetime studying beekeeping and never be able to learn all of it. My bees amaze me every day with something new. That is what keeps beekeeping so interesting to me. I wanted to write this book so that you could learn from all my years of experience and not have to re-invent the wheel. I have assembled a vast number of questions and answers for you. Since all of the questions and answers in this book are in no special order, I have provided you with an index in the back of the book for your convenience. These questions are real questions from folks who have emailed me on the Lone Star Farms website and from folks who contacted me with questions about beekeeping throughout the years. There is rarely just one answer to a beekeeping question (especially among beekeepers) but, I have answered the questions with the answers that have always worked best for me over the years. Most books on beekeeping describe how to perform beekeeping tasks. These books talk mostly about the mechanical parts of beekeeping. There are many beekeeping books on the market for you to choose from. You could, in most cases, remove the title from one of those books and post it on another without noticing any difference. When writing this book I wanted to blend the mechanical parts of beekeeping with the passion beekeepers feel when working with their bees. This book is written not only for the hobby beekeeper but also for the commercial beekeeper. I have, over the many years, challenged some of the long standing techniques of beekeeping and have either modified some of them or created new ones. For me, these improvements have worked better for today's lifestyle. In this book I share some of those techniques with you along with my own philosophy about raising stronger and healthier bees without placing any chemicals or pesticides inside the hive.
